Retinal Imaging
The retina is the delicate layer inside the eye that detects light and sends messages to the brain, allowing us to see. Disease of the retina is one of the most common reasons for sight loss. In many cases, early detection of eye disease allows vision to be preserved.
The retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly, allowing signs of other conditions such as diabetes and raised blood pressure to be detected at an eye examination.
Horrocks & Boyd is one of the few practices offering a comprehensive examination of the retina using both Optomap Ultra-Wide Field Imaging and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
Optomap Ultra-wide Field Retinal Imaging
The Optomap ultra-wide digital retinal imaging system captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image. Traditional methods typically reveal only 10-15% of your retina at one time.
The unique Optomap ultra-wide view enhances the ability of the optometrists at Horrocks & Boyd to detect even the earliest signs of disease that appear on your retina.
Taking the image is quick and painless, and in most cases does not require eye drops. Optomap is suitable for people of all ages, including young children. We recommend using the Optomap for examining the retina at every eye check. Quite simply, it provides better and more complete eye examination than most other techniques.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, provides a highly detailed view of the different layers of the retina. It also allows us to see beneath the surface of the retina. By examining the individual layers of the retina, our optometrists can detect the early signs of eye diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Glaucoma. OCT imaging has also become an integral part of monitoring these conditions once diagnosed.
